Although it’s not related to special collections, this one was too good to pass up. A package came in today from Naperville, Illinois containing two books which had been checked out over three decades ago. They were due on March 23, 1974, and so were 36 years, 2 months, and 25 days (13,235 days total) overdue! Our fine is 10 cents a day, so technically the patron owes us $1,323.50 in overdue fines, but we will likely not press the issue. In any case, whoever it was checked the books out before we had a computer system (back in the day of card files and rubber stamps–Old School!).
What were the books? They were both on the same subject: the contentious Hayes-Tilden presidential election of 1876–checked out just as the Nixon trials were beginning.
