18th Century Manga

One of my fabulous volunteers kicked out some truly spectacular books–Japanese tales for children, which seem the equivalent of 18th century manga.

Bakemono Koyogun (Fight with ghosts). 1748. Illustrated by Shigeharu Yamamoto.

Because they were in black wrappers, they are called “Kurohan” (black books). This story is about the fights of the warriors under Shingen Takeda, a feudal lord, against badgers which haunted the household.

We have three of these works in special collections, in five physical volumes.
