One of the many perqs of working with rare books is the often fascinating people you meet. Yesterday I was very pleased to show off our collections to Mr. Ernest Borgnine, who was in Providence to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival.
He was especially impressed with the whaling collection, and liked the harpoons and the shoulder gun I handed to him. “They actually pay you to do this?” he asked, and congratulated me on landing such a sweet job. Amen, brother, and right back at you (he looks great at 92!).
