African-American Hero

This image is of Toussaint Louverture, recently dubbed by one of his biographers (Madison Smartt Bell) as “the highest achieving African-American hero of all time.” The engraving comes from our copy of Marcus Rainsford’s An historical account of the Black Empire of Hayti (London, 1805). As a 25-year-old English soldier, Rainsford was Captain of the 3rd West India Regiment when he went to Haiti in 1799. His is the first account in English of the Haitian Revolution, which was the first successful slave revolt in history.
